A Fresh Chapter at Gras Lawn
When I first visited this flat at Gras Lawn, the customers wanted the whole place freshened up. That meant the kitchen and dining area, hallway, lounge, bedroom and bathroom. We went round together, talked through what they wanted and worked out what needed doing before I made a start.
The kitchen and dining area needed brightening up. I worked carefully around the existing units, flooring and fittings, giving the room a fresh look while keeping everything else as it was.

The hallway connects all the rooms, so it was part of the repaint too. I took care of the preparation here before getting the new colour on.

The lounge already had plenty of light, but the wardrobe was taking up a fair bit of room. Once it was removed, the space felt more open, even before the decorating started.

I used the same colour in the bedroom as in the kitchen and hallway. It kept things simple and helped the rooms feel connected, while the lounge and bathroom had their own colours.

The customers wanted a change in the bathroom as well. Before I could get the new colours on, I prepared the surfaces, taking care around the fittings and edges.

I started in the kitchen and dining area by filling the old fixing holes, cracks and uneven patches. I caulked the gaps along the skirtings and repaired the windowsills where they needed it. Once the filler was dry, I sanded the repaired areas smooth, ready for painting.

In parts of the flat, I took the same colour across the walls, ceilings and woodwork. This is called colour drenching. With fewer white edges breaking things up, the smaller rooms felt a bit more spacious.

The lounge needed some filling and sanding before I could paint it. I also treated a few problem spots with Zinsser B-I-N to stop the marks showing through the fresh paint.

I painted the skirtings to match the walls.

The bathroom ended up being the customer’s favourite room. I painted the walls dark green, with a light green ceiling and matching skirtings. It was quite a change from how it looked before, and they were really pleased with the result.
